There are so many emotions that surround the thought of travel.  Travel can be fun and exciting, but it can also be stressful and disruptive to your routine expecially when it comes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Your Travel days can be long when you are waiting in lines, sitting in airports or on planes.  Then add in a touch of stress, hoping that each segment of your travel plan goes off without a hitch.  This is when you want to make sure you are making the right choices so that your body thanks you.

Here are 8 suggestions for healthy travels...

Stay Hydrated: Did you know, our bodies are over 50% water so staying hydrated is so important.  Drinking plenty of water will keep your system functioning as it should, which is important when traveling.  Avoid alcohol, caffeniated beverages, and sugary drinks, as these can dehydrate you.
Eat Nutritious Foods: Choose healthy, balanced meals that include plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Try to avoid fast food and processed snacks.
Stay Active: I know this can be challenging on the day of travel but make time for exercise or physical activity each day.  This can be as simple as taking a walk (on the beach, maybe), using a hotel or resort gym, or maybe join an aquafit class or a salsa lesson for some fun.
Get Enough Sleep: Try to maintain a regular sleep schedule, even when you're travelling.  You might want to bring earplugs and an eye mask to help you sleep better.
Wash Your Hands Frequently: Traveling can expose you to germs and bacteria.  Wash your hands often with soap and water or use sanitizer if you are not able to get to a sink.
Protect Your Skin:  Please, Please, Please protect your skin, this will not only help you on your trip but for long term health as well.  Use a sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin from harmful rays, or wear protective clothing as well as hats and sunglasses, when you're outdoors.
Manage Stress:  Traveling can be stressful, so find ways to manage your stress such as meditating, yoga or something as simple as deep breathing exercises.
Stay Connected:  Knowing everything is okay at home by keeping in touch with loved ones will help you feel connected and reduce feelings of homesick or loneliness.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle while traveling is not always easy, making the best decision as you go along is all you can really do.  Show your body a little love by providing it with the nutrients it needs for optimal health and you will enjoy your trip more if you are feeling good.

Of course, this isn't to say you can't have a treat while on vacation, but everything in moderation and more good meals than not will help maintain your health enough to enjoy your time away.

By following the tips above this should help you enjoy your trip to the fullest.

Yours in health, till next time
